Search Options
Keyword Search
A keyword search looks for words and/or numbers in
every field (title, author, subject, publisher, year, etc.). For example, typing
ocean circulation in the keyword search box will retrieve all records that contain the words
ocean and
circulation in any field(s). Keyword search boxes appear on the Library Catalog Home page, on the Advanced Search page, and at the top of the search result page.
Advanced Search
The Advanced Search page allows users to specify which field(s) to search in, and to combine searches across multiple fields. Boolean (and/or/not), wild card (*/#/?), and exact phrase searches are not currently available.
Subject Search
A subject search looks for words only in the subject field. For example, typing
ocean circulation in the subject search box will retrieve all records that contain the words
ocean and
circulation in the subject field. The subject field mainly uses the Library of Congress Subject Headings controlled vocabulary, which visitors may browse through at the
Library of Congress Authorities website. The subject search box appears on the Advanced Search page.
Special Features
Subject Links
Many records display subject links. Click on a subject link to find all items in the catalog which have the same subject heading.
FSU Libraries Links
When viewing an individual record, click on the "Search for this title in FSU Libraries" link to automatically search the FSU Libaries catalog for matching titles. This is useful if an item in the COAPS Library collection is currently checked-out.
Google Scholar Links
When viewing an individual record, click on the "Search for this title in Google Scholar" link to automatically search Google Scholar for matching titles. This is useful for finding citations as well as electronic previews of books.
Electronic Access Links
If a link appears in the electronic access section of an individual record, you may click on it for additional information about online availability. Many journal records have electronic access links to the FSU Libraries e-Journals database.
Book Bag
The Book Bag is for creating a list of items you are interested in. You may print out your list, or email it to the librarian to have items placed on reserve.
